Bestseller
A bestseller is a product that sells more than most others in its range over a chosen period.
How it works
A bestseller list depends on two choices: the period and the measure, whether units, orders or revenue. Change either and the list changes.
In our study of 1.4 million products, 71% of bestsellers were in the top for no more than 3 months out of 13. Like any product, a bestseller rises and fades along the product lifecycle. For how long the top lasts, see how long bestsellers last; to tell a steady seller from a spike, see identifying real bestsellers.
Where you see it
In Merchant Center, the Best sellers report ranks products and brands in a category and country by estimated units sold on Google, weekly or monthly. The count includes ads and organic listings. The report marks whether you carry each product and covers the whole market.
Example
Example store, not client data.
Over 12 months the tableware shop sold 120 Christmas mug sets and 90 dinner plates. The mug set was listed all year but bought only in November and December; the plates sold in 10 months. By units for the year, the mug set leads: 120 against 90. By months with sales, the plates lead: 10 against 2.
How GetProfit reads it
The portal’s Bestsellers label is narrower than the everyday word: products that sell in at least 6 months out of 12 and hold the target ROAS. It is one of the eight labels, and its suggested action is to protect impression share and scale the budget. You see it in Products and labels.
Not to be confused with
- Long tail — the many products that each sell once or twice but together bring a noticeable share of revenue. A bestseller is a single product at the head of the list.
Right and wrong readings
- Wrong: “The mug set sold the most this year, so it is among the portal’s Bestsellers.” Right: its 120 units came in 2 months, and the label needs sales in at least 6 months out of 12. The plates can qualify if their ROAS holds the target.
