Structured title
A structured title is the Merchant Center attribute that carries a product's title together with a mark saying whether generative AI wrote it.
How it works
The attribute structured_title has two parts. content holds the title text, up to 150 characters, the same limit as the ordinary title. digital_source_type says who wrote it: trained_algorithmic_media for generative AI, default for a person. If the type is left empty, Google assumes default. A matching attribute, structured_description, works the same way for descriptions of up to 5,000 characters.
Google’s rule: every title created with generative AI goes into structured_title, marked trained_algorithmic_media, and never into title. A title written by a person may use either attribute. Google lists this among the minimum requirements for titles, and products that break them can be disapproved. How to roll out AI-written texts safely is covered in AI-generated titles and descriptions in your feed.
Where you see it
- Text feed: the type, a colon and the title, such as
trained_algorithmic_media:"Dinner plate 27 cm: white porcelain". A title containing a colon goes in double quotes. - XML feed:
g:digital_source_typeandg:contentinsideg:structured_title. - Merchant API: the product fields
structuredTitleandstructuredDescription, which the reference describes as fields for AI-generated text.
Example
Example store, not client data.
The tableware shop has an AI tool rewrite 500 of its 3,000 titles. It sends those 500 in structured_title, marked trained_algorithmic_media, and clears title for the same products. The other 3,000 − 500 = 2,500 keep their ordinary title. If the shop had kept both attributes on the 500, Google would have used the old titles.
Not to be confused with
- Title and description — the ordinary text fields, with no mark of who wrote them.
- Product highlight — a separate attribute: bullet points about the product’s most relevant features.
Right and wrong readings
- Wrong: “Add a structured title next to the old one and Google picks the better of the two.” Right: with both attributes present, Google uses only
title. - Wrong: “Structured title is only for AI-written titles.” Right: a title written by a person can go there too, marked
defaultor with no mark.
