Product set (Meta)

A product set is a group of products from a Meta catalogue, chosen by filters or by hand, that an ad promotes instead of the whole catalogue.

How it works

A Meta catalogue holds every product you send to Meta. Every catalogue has a default set, All products, and you can add as many more sets as you want. When you create catalogue ads, you choose the set whose products they promote.

You build a set by filters or by hand. Filters work on product fields such as price, brand, product type, availability or a custom label. They are dynamic: products join or leave the set as their data changes. A hand-picked set holds the products you ticked or pasted in as a list of IDs.

Meta’s product data specification recommends filtering by internal_label rather than custom_label_0 to custom_label_4. Changing a custom label sends products through policy review, which can affect ad delivery; internal labels change without it. Splitting a catalogue by product results: Meta catalogue ads by product performance.

Where you see it

  • Commerce Manager: the Catalogue tab, Sets.
  • Ads Manager: choosing a product set when you set up catalogue ads.

Example

Example store, not client data.

The tableware shop has 3,000 products in its Meta catalogue and marks 150 bestsellers with the internal label bestseller. Set A filters on that label and holds 150 products. Set B excludes the label and holds the other 2,850. Together they cover 150 + 2,850 = 3,000 products.

Not to be confused with

  • Listing group — Google’s split of products inside a Performance Max asset group. Its tree always keeps an “everything else” node for the rest; a product set has no such node.

Right and wrong readings

  • Wrong: “Our bestseller set holds only what its filter says.” Right: if Add recommended products is turned on in Commerce Manager, Meta also adds bestsellers and products with conversions in the last 14 days that don’t match the filters.
  • Wrong: “We left a product out of the set, so it is out of catalogue ads.” Right: it is out only of ads that use this set. Ads built on All products, or on another set whose filter it matches, can still show it.
