Dead stock
Dead stock is inventory that has not sold within the period a store expects, so the money paid for it stays tied up.
How it works
Dead stock is a warehouse term. The store has already paid for the goods, and that money stays frozen until they sell. Typical causes are a season that has passed, an outdated model or demand that never came. There is no single benchmark: how long counts as “dead” depends on the product, its season and its shelf life.
One warning sign is low inventory turnover: cost of goods sold divided by average inventory. To clear the stock, a store can cut to a clearance price, bundle it with a faster-moving product, sell through a closeout channel, donate it or dispose of it.
An ad account does not see the warehouse. Google Ads records spend, clicks and sales. Merchant Center gets each product’s availability status, but not how long it has been in stock. So ad data alone cannot show dead stock: dead stock in your ad account is a different question from dead stock on the shelf.
Not to be confused with
- Zombie products — products that spend ad budget and bring no sales. The measure is ad spend, not stock. In the portal they carry the Dormant label, or To remove once they have spent a lot.
- Assortment coverage — the share of the catalogue that gets impressions at all. The ads have never tested a product with no impressions, so its missing sales say nothing about demand.
Right and wrong readings
- Wrong: “No sales from ads for months, so the product is dead stock.” Right: it may never have been shown. In our study of 1.4 million products, 74.1% of the 1,196,357 products that started at zero spend never got a single impression in 13 months. Of those that started at zero spend and later sold, the first sale came after a median 4 months.
